Summary in Hungarian
A közelmúltban sikerült előállítanunk a molekulakristályok új családjának, a fullerén-kubán rendszer rotor-sztátor fázisainak első néhány tagját. Magasabb hőmérsékleten a kristályok topokémiai reakciók során nagy stabilitású kopolimerekké alakulnak.
Summary
Recently we succeeded in the preparation of the first few members of a new family of molecular crystals, the rotor-stator phases of the fullerene-cubane system. In the new materials the perfect match of the complementary molecular surfaces gives rise to unusual dynamics, different from both the orientationally ordered and the plastic crystals: the fullerenes freely rotate in the molecular bearings of static cubane molecules. At elevated temperatures the crystals transform to high-stability copolymers via topochemical reactions. The objectives of the present research project are the systematic development of this family of materials, the better understanding of the structure, the dynamics and the physical and chemical properties. We prepare a series of related supramolecular crystals by the modification of the sizes and the shapes of the components. Thus, we can design the supramolecular interaction, and the rotor-stator characteristics, simultaneously. We detemine the crystal structure of the new materials and try to construct the phase diagram of the fullerene-cubane system. We attempt to explain the rotor-stator materials in terms of new orientational mesomorphic phases in between the orientationally ordered and the plastic crystals. We carry out the topochemical copolymerization of the fullerene-cubane crystals, determine the molecular structures of the monomer units and study the optical and the mechanical properties of the new polymers.
